On Wednesday June 1, 2011, UL Lafayette conducted a discussion-based tabletop exercise in collaboration with internal departments and external agencies to test coordination, interoperability, and communications that would occur during an actual emergency. The exercise provided participants with an opportunity to discuss and evaluate current concepts, plans, and capabilities, and to identify lessons learned and corrective actions. Participants included university faculty and staff, local and state emergency management agencies, regional support organizations, and federal agencies.
This exercise was the result of Emergency Management for Higher Education (EMHE) grant through the the U.S. Department of Education. The project is spearheaded by the NIMSAT Institute, at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in collaboration with Joey Pons, UL Lafayette Safety Director, and Joey Sturm, UL Lafayette Chief of Police. The purpose of this grant is to enhance and test the university’s All-Hazards Emergency Operations Plan and develop resources for campus emergency response. Witt and Associates, an emergency management-consulting agency, has been involved with the project and facilitated the exercise.
